My son turned 2 a couple weeks ago and is way into trains. I had to make his cake and I found the most awesome pan on amazon. It is a train muffin pan. How cool is this?
It is a muffin pan and worked GREAT! (picture of full cake at the end of post of course)
Anyway, I wanted to make a chocolate cake but knew that this train would be a lot cuter decorated with a white or yellow cake so I made the muffin pan a yellow cake.
Go to page 2 to read the rest of the post and see the cake!I then made four chocolate cake mixes and layered them. I made homemade butter cream frosting for the inside and the outside of the cake. I was going to do green fondant and so I needed the butter cream frosting to make it stick. I then used brown sugar to make the dirt part of the train track and black licorice to make the track.
I wanted the green to look more like raised grass so I colored some butter cream frosting, green, and started adding it with a tip. It started to melt so you can see in the front, the melting part. Oh well.
Anyway, here is the finished product, I thought it turned out great and everyone seemed to enjoy it a lot!
Have a great day!

How cute. I want to get more into cake decorating.
Ooooo - well done. I also love making cakes for my kids - I think I start planning them about 4 months before their birthdays and the whole party theme revolves around what cake they/I want to make. Even as I type I'm buzy making a Very Hungry caterpillar one for DD3 first birthday picnic tomorrow, and made Russian nesting dolls for DD2 last weekend (http://modernmumbflat.blogspot.com/2011/09/who-hosted-party-for-50-kids-today-then.html).
Lindsey Me too! I plan the party around the cake too! It's fun!
Again!! Great job on the cake. So, So cute!!
what a cute cake! I wish I could be more creative (and patient) to do something like this!
Janelle: It's all about youtube! The fondant cakes, tome, are easier then regular frosting!
