Things are tight right now and buying groceries keeps going up and up. I have spent time in front of the cookbook in the past trying to only buy what I am going to use payday to payday but I tend to mess this up a little bit.
I live so ridiculously close to the grocery store that I am changing the way I shop a little bit. This will also help me with my exercise routine (blogged about that on my exercise blog http://tawnasplan.blogspot.com/2010/08/going-to-grocery-to-lose-weight.html ).
I am going to go day by day or every other day and only plan 1-2 big meals. I will then walk, either by myself or with kids, to the grocery and only by what I don’t have at home to make the meals with. This way I am not going into the store with a big list and getting tired and mad by the end, and not caring what I put in the cart.
I have some old receipts and will calculate what I have spent in groceries over the past 3-4 months and after I shop day by day for 2-3 pay checks I will see if I am saving any money.
The other part of this plan that seems to intrigue my decision is the lack of snacks I will be able to fit in the stroller or in my hands as I walk home. If I can’t carry it I can’t buy it.
The other day my daughter sat in the back of the double stroller with a big watermelon on her lap. It looked hilarious but she did not mind because she knew she got watermelon when we got home. This made me happy because it was a healthy treat!
I will see what this saves me, hopefully some cash!
Answer: It is 11-3-2010 today
I saved about $125 per month shopping every other day and sometimes everyday. I have pretty much no snacks int he house which has helped with my weight loss and this has helped with my child and husband not eating all night long. I am going to continue to shop this way, it has definitely helped!

"I have some old receipts and will calculate what I have spent in groceries over the past 3-4 months."
Were you able to figure out how much you ACTUALLY spent for a measureable period of time?

I jsut started going through old bank statements today as I do not have all the receipts that I need. I am hoping to have them added up in the next few days and will post my bi weekly totals in a bit.
I am very curious too, I would love to save some money!
So I tallied up the last 4 months and the average I have spent at the grocery is $559 per month. I cannot get a good comparison with my daily shopping until the beginning of a fresh month so I will start compairing Sept 1 and let you know what I spend at the end of the month. I will do it for a few months to see if the numbers are consistent.
Answering this on my original post so everyone can see it.
