Fat is not a bad word…

I have had a few friends ask me about fat lately that is why I chose to add this post.

It is not a bad thing to eat fat in your diet in fact you need it in order for the body to function properly. Every nutrient has a responsibility and metabolizes in your body and fat does do a big job. It is the type of fat you eat that is the issue.

Bad fats which are saturated fats (those that are solids at room temp. like butter, Crisco etc.) are the fats that can be avoided or hardly eaten at all. Unsaturated fats (those liquid at room temp. except for coconut and palm oil) are the better fats and NEED to be incorporated into your body.

I was actually watching another nutritionist on a talk show talking about how nuts (which have good fats) and oils and berries can help slim the waist line. Fats give you about twice as much energy as carbohydrates do they just take a bit longer to burn off so you don’t need as many but still need them.

I am trying desperately to bypass the bad fats but still incorporate the good. I have started cooking in olive oil a lot more, which is also helping with the flavor, and snacking on nuts in between meals when I want a little snack. I will not eat as many peanuts though as they are not quite as good as other nuts, almonds are the best for the amount of fat and calories.

Have a wonderful day!

Good workout today but getting bored…

I did 20 min of turbo sculpt today and added 5 pound weights to my legs and used the 3 pound dumbbells. I got bored and then turned on the cardio party and did 15 min with the same weights. I got bored again and ran in front of the TV for 15 min with the weights so did a total workout of about 50 min. I did not want to stop working out but was getting bored with the videos. This is the problem with workout videos, I get bored after about 2 weeks. The nice thing is that I remember a lot of moves so it is easy to put them together on my own which is what I might do after a I decide to measure after this second week of turbo jam. I still have a lot of energy and want to work out so that is definitely a good sing.

Carbohydrate plan…

Photobucket
Image is from photobucket

I am going to try something different with my carbohydrate (CHO) eating. There are so many diets out there that tell you to take the CHO’s away totally and then bring them back in slowly to your diet. I don’t like this and I will tell you why. Anytime you starve yourself of any nutrient it makes the body not want to metabolize properly. The body will crave these CHO’s and thus it will have to turn to other sources for its energy. This can help you lose weight but can really screw up your metabolism.

The other problem is that your body will start to gain weight faster after you start the CHO’s again, thus can equal an even bigger weight gain then before. The idea is NOT to take the CHO’s out totally and bring them back in slowly, it is better to take them down slowly so you do not deprive your body of its nutrients. Simple CHO’s are fine they burn off very quickly and this is your fruits and vegetables. You need not take these away. It is the complex CHO’s that are the weight gainers but you DO NEED them in order to be healthy. Throw all the white refined CHO’s out the window and go to whole gain instead. They are more easily burned and so much better for you.

This is my plan:

Eat my complex CHO’s in the morning and early afternoon and NO complex CHO;s at dinner or before bed. I am NOT going to take away my simple CHO’s (fruits and vegetables at night). This way I will have about half a day to get my complex CHO metabolism going and this should help me lose more weight a little quicker. If this plan works I will make this a permanent change in my diet. Now let’s see what happens.

Better workout today…

Well today was much better. I actually made it through the full 18 min burn workout and the first 10 min of ab jam before my son woke up. I feel much better about that. I am OK with only the first 10 min of the 20 min ab jam as the second 10 is on the floor and I hate that part anyway I also don’t feel real bad about yesterday anymore because I went to my Irish class last night and got an awesome hard shoe workout for an hour and was dead at the end, so it ended up being a good workout day. Glad that Monday night dance class is back on, yay!

Trying not to be frustrated today…

I am feeling bad today because I am getting very frustrated. I was trying to do the turbo sculpt video today and my son kept waking up during his nap (every 5-10 min) and my daughter is very whiny and needy today. I had to take a break every 5-10 min and go back to the video and by the time I got to 32 of the 40 min. I gave up. I did do most of it, but am just so frustrated!

Why I feel bad? Well, I feel bad when I get frustrated at the kids. It seems that they always know when Mommy is in the middle of something or wants to do something and that is when they need me the most. I hate it when I get upset because I chose to stay at home and raise them and I shouldn’t get this way over a workout video right? There are days that I consider going to work a few days a week in order to get a break and then I see horrible stories like the one on AMW this week and saw how a child care provider killed a small child by punching her in the stomach and it just sickens me and I am so glad I am the one staying home with them.

I have a master’s degree and I like having a career but know that I will have many years to venture out and build that career but now is not the time. I need to remember that I will miss my kids being young one day and just need to vent now and then. Thanks for listening to my venting today!

Some loss on turbo but…

Here is what I have done since Dec 23rd:
Wed 23rd: Cardio party (about 40 min)
Thurs 24th: 20 min workout and 18 min burn (from learn and burn CD)
Friday 25th: Christmas, NO workout
Sat. 26th: So tired NO workout
Sun 27th: 20 min workout and 18 min burn
Mon 28th: Turbo sculpt (about 40 min)
Tues 29th: Ab jam (20 min) and 18 min burn
Wed 30th: Turbo sculpt
Thurs 31st: No workout cleaned 3 hours and cooked 3 hours for party.
Fri 1st: Cardio party with 1.5 lb arm weights (only 23 min because baby woke up)
Sat 2nd: No workout, went with husband to work on computers for his work for 3 hours
Sun 3rd: Cardio party with 1.5 lb arm weights

I did do measurements and had a slight loss in inches but I really think that with it being Christmas and New Years I did eat more poorly than I would like to admit. I am going to give this another week and keep using the arm weights to give it a more fair trial. This time of year is hard but I have thrown all the leftovers from everything away today and back on the saddle, no parties, no more junk. It least I did lose something so that is good. Some is better than none.

Measurements: last measurements were on 12-12-09

Bust: 44 (no gain no loss)
Waist: 46 (no gain no loss)
Hips 48 ½ (1/2 inch loss)
Thigh-1: 27 ¾ (no loss)
Arm: 13 ½ (1/2 inch gain, BUT I can see the slightest definition when I lift my arm in my deltoid, whihoo! So even though I gained a ½ inch it is muscle. That is fine. The fat will burn off eventually and the inches will go down and maybe even see a muscle yay!)

Turbo workouts 12/23-12/29

Wed 23rd: Cardio party (about 40 min)
Thurs 24th: 20 min workout and 18 min burn (from learn and burn CD)
Friday 25th: Christmas, NO workout
Sat. 26th: So tired NO workout
Sun 27th: 20 min workout and 18 min burn
Mon 28th: Turbo sculpt (about 40 min)
Tues 29th: Ab jam (20 min) and 18 min burn

I don’t like to just do the short 18-20 min workouts alone. I probably would have started with just the shorter ones if I hadn’t been working out already. I feel like I need a bit more movement after only 20 min. So if I do not get it least 30 min I will do 2 workouts.

I also do get my workouts interrupted by my 4 month old and/or my 3 ½ year old. I have just been pausing it and taking care of them and then come back to where I left off. I am trying not to let this frustrate me and make me stop. The fact of the matter is, is that you don’t need to have 20-40 min straight. Scientists have figured out and 3-4 ten minute increments burns just as much and is just as good for you.

I have also noticed that I am sleeping a lot better and getting tired a bit earlier which has been a problem well before I had my kids. Exercise is definitely helping me with my insomnia and helps me stay asleep at night when my 4 month old is not waking me up. I actually want to go to bed around 10 and this is a good thing as before I was anywhere between 11-1am and then had a lot of broken sleep.

I walked the dog all days but the 2 I did not do any workout. What I am noticing is that the workouts are getting a lot easier and I am starting to be able to do the higher intensity without straining myself too much. I have also noticed that the last 3 times I have walked the dog I have gone 1 hour instead o 20-30 min. because it is also getting easier and I am getting more stamina. So yay! I will do 3 more days and take my New Years measurements on the 1st. I plan on working out every day.

I picked a hard week…

Wow this week is ruff. I picked Christmas week to turbo experiment and there are so many leftovers in the fridge, argh! So, this is the last day for leftovers for me. I made a lot Christmas eve. I am finding that all this fatty food is making it harder to get motivated to work out too so even though I am doing the turbo jam everyday I think I am going to not lose anything because of all the left over Christmas food. So I will add a couple extra days to my turbo week and the leftovers are axed for me. It was fun to eat for a few days but need to tone it down now!
