Paying it forward to the mail carrier

I hope you will share!

Pay it forward picIt has been colder then it has been in 20-years out here in the Midwest. So many schools and businesses have closed during the cold weather but do you know who hasn’t? The Post Office.

We didn’t have garbage pick up for a week but we got our mail every day.

Now I don’t blame people for closing because of the below zero degrees with wind chills on top of it, in a humid state that makes the ice unbearable. But I wanted to recognize the mail carriers for their persistence in this horrible weather. So I did something a little special for mine today.

20140123_110935I have had this Starbucks gift card in my wallet for a few weeks now. I would use it eventually, but I don’t need it. I have nice warm coffee in my home and many times, as the mail comes, I am sipping on it.

Today I decided my cold mail carrier needed a hot drink more then I did. I put it in an envelope to the mail carrier and told him to get a hot coffee or hot chocolate after work today and told him thanks for delivering my mail through the polar vortex. Now my only worry is that he will be nervous opening an envelope or that he is not allowed. I sure hope he can and I hope more that he uses it and warms up knowing he was thought of today.

Paying it forward does not have to be a huge deal. Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.

How have you paid it forward to someone int he past? I would love to share your story here!

Aww what a kind gesture. I’m not sure the temperatures here in the UK are anything like you are experiencing, but we’ve had lots of flooding and non stop rain. The funny thing is this post reminded me of a conversation I had with my postie when he delivered some mail in the pouring rain. I commented I didn’t envy his job and that it did a wonderful job of it too! (didn’t have anything to offer him though, maybe next time i’ll hand him a flask and a biscuit) 🙂

what a wonderful heart you have, and such a great idea for the mailman. It’s always good to be considerate of others and to thank them for all they do. Thanks for the reminder!

  3. This is really great and so kind of you!  I’ve wanted to do something nice for our mail carriers as well.  Must check out your other pay it forward posts.  hugs!

How sweet of you!   You certainly made his day!

I paid the school fees for a couple of disadvantaged kids at my son’s school whose parents were laid-off.
