Is school for only 90 miutes really worth it?

I hope you will share!

My school district does half day Kindergarten. This may sound great but I have to tell you that it is a pain in the $%&!

I am actually busier then before, when my daughter did not go anywhere. I thought when she started school that I would be so relieved to have some quite time but I am finding myself more stressed out.

Today is the monthly early dismissal day. She goes from 12:00-1:30pm…really?

It seems I now spend my morning forcing down breakfast early enough so she is hungry for lunch before school. This is now a fight. Next I am shoving lunch down her throat, hungry or not, and we fight to get dressed and hair done in time.

Then I walk her to school, which takes me 10 minutes, tops. It takes about just as long to drive.

Next I get home and force my 2-year-old to have his nap by 12:05 and then I have 2 hours and 10 minutes to get everything done I need to. That goes by FAST!

I have to wake my son up by 2:10-2:15 so I can get him ready to walk or drive to pick up my daughter. Ask me if he is happy…NOT.

Then I pick her up and we have a snack, etc and before you know it I have to think of dinner.

Since when is 2.5 hours of Kindergarten even worth it? Why do some schools have all day and some half. And when is half day only 2.5 hours?

Next year will be a lot easier. I can get her up and then hubby can drop her off. I can get my son used to taking his nap 30 minutes earlier so we can still pick my daughter up at 2:30 but he will it least get 2.5 hours of sleep instead of 2.

I won’t have to be ready with the baby to take her, which will save time too.

Today is only 90 minutes of school due to the early dismissal. I have contemplated a hundred times to keep her home. My biggest fear with that is that I didn’t want her to think school is not important. It was hard to take her though.

I did however, get my awesome neighbor to pick her up which will help. The last early dismissal I picked her up and my son was so not happy with an hour nap.

School…Frustrating me and I am a teacher!!!

Have a great day!

  • Wait until you have to start juggling between more than one school, that's when the fun really begins.

    • Especially when my son starts K and my daughterer is in 3rd grade, I will be back to running and then middle school vs elementary! You are right, it will only get worse!

  • I've heard of half a day Pre-K but never half a day kindergarten. While that 2.5 hours might seem to fly by I think it's worth it if she's learning and getting to interact with other kids her age.

  • HA! At age 62 I was dropping the l yr old off at 8:00 so I could have some free time, then dropping the 4 yr old off at 8;20 for kindergarten, then picking the l yr old up at 11:15 so I could get the 4 yr old at 12:00 so we could all go home, eat lunch, and take a nap...before ballet.
Today as I am crowding 70, I take the now 10 year old to school at 7:30, then drive the now 6 yr old to his school. At 2:30 I sit in the pick up line to get the 6 yr. old, then 3:00 to get the 10 yr old, then take the 10 yr old to gymnastics at 4:00, the six year old to Boy Scouts at 6:00, then pick up the 10 yr old and take her to violin practice, then at 6:30 to Girl Scouts, pick up the 6 yr old from Boy Scouts at 7:00, and then pick up the 10 yr old from Girl Scouts at 7:30. AND THAT'S JUST MONDAY!
